Diabetes is a long-standing disease that affects the pancreas and ultimately affects blood sugar levels in the body, leading to many other deadly diseases. Diabetes medically known as diabetes mellitus which is associated with high blood sugar levels in the body.
The human body has a proper metabolic system to control blood sugar levels via a hormone called insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas. Due to diabetes, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to reach normal levels to control blood sugar levels, ultimately leading to high blood sugar levels.
Left untreated, diabetes spreads like cancer throughout the body and damages many organs such as the eyes, kidneys, liver and nerve cells.
Commonly, there are three types of diabetes mellitus that result in damage to the Pancreas or a decrease in insulin hormone.
Type 1 diabetes is the autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune cells start attacking the beta cells in the pancreas, where this insulin hormone is secreted, leading to a decrease in insulin hormone levels in the body.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes mellitus, in which the body becomes resistant to the insulin hormone and the level of glucose in the body exceeds the normal level. About 90-95% of diabetics have this type of diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is the condition of high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. This condition occurred due to the production of anti-insulin blocking hormones by the placenta, which limits insulin hormone, resulting in an increase in blood sugar levels.
Common symptoms of diabetes include blurred vision, weight loss, increased thirst, increased hunger, extreme tiredness, and frequent urination. A decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction in men can also be caused by diabetes. Meanwhile, vaginal dryness and urinary tract infections in women can also be a sign of diabetes.
