Arthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions which affects millions of people worldwide. Arthritis literally means inflammation of joint(s). There are several types of arthritis which include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout and infectious arthritis.
We’ll review symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthitis is an auto immune disorder. Our body has strong defense system comprising of B and T cells. These cells play a very important role in our immunity. They form antibodies against the pathogen or any foreign body. But somehow, when there is disturbances, they form rheumatoid factor, which accumulates in the joints and releases severeal inflammatory cytokines. It results in inflammation of the joint, and rheumatoid arthritis occurs.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are generally;

  1. Joint pain
  2. Stiffness of joint
  3. Tiredness
  4. Weight loss
  5. Swelling, redness and tenderness
  6. Fever
  7. Weight loss

Rheumatoid arthritis can be diagnosed by patient’s medical history, general physical examination, blood tests, imaging tests (used to indicate any bone deformity), and synovial fluid analysis.
The treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is not only medication but also it includes physical therapy, life style modifications and surgery in severe and late stages. The medications include NSAIDs, DMARDs, corticosteroids, and biologic drugs.

The patient should consult with the doctor if he develops symptoms and should follow the instructions of the doctors for effective treatment and recovery.
